Welsh referee Ben Connor, just 22, made headlines by stepping up in a Champions Cup match between Bath and Saracens. When Georgian referee Nika Amashukeli had to bow out due to an injury, Connor, son of former rugby player Shaun, seized the unique opportunity to own the second-half whistle. For the first time in his career, he was in charge of a Champions Cup game—and he handled it like a seasoned pro!

Despite being thrust into the spotlight without warning, Connor swiftly adapted to the pace and pressure of the game. Not shy about making tough calls, he even handed out a yellow card to Bath’s Beno Obano shortly after taking over. Former international referee Owen Doyle commended his confident performance, stating that Connor “stuck to his task” and emerged with “considerable credit.”
It’s been quite a journey for Connor, who initially played rugby up to the age of 16 before settling into a referee role. Having started refereeing at just 14, he’s no stranger to the pressures of the game. From officiating BKT URC matches to World Series Sevens finals, he’s rapidly making a name for himself in the world of rugby refereeing.

Reflecting on how to handle a game, Connor shared, “I like to let the game breathe. It’s about the players, not the whistle.” And it seems this approach is paying off. His star continues to rise, proving you don’t have to be the biggest player on the pitch to make a huge impact.

What an incredible night for the young Welshman—and who knows what other exciting matches are in his future!
