Evie, a nature enthusiast, was having a splash and exploring under a bridge when she spotted the nine-inch pale axolotl nestled among the rocks. Initially, mum Melanie thought her daughter might have mistaken it for a common newt or snake. But lo and behold, it really was an axolotl – the first of its kind found in the wild in the UK!

These unique amphibians, native to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City, are renowned for their regenerative abilities but are nearly extinct in the wild. Thanks to video games like Minecraft, they’ve become quite popular as pets. Could it be that one found its way to Wales?

Nicknamed “Dippy D” – a nod to the ‘Dipping Bridge’ where it was discovered and the Welsh dragon – the little creature has since become a cherished member of the Hill household back in Leicester. After getting help from a local breeder, Evie and her family have set about making Dippy D feel right at home, complete with a new tank and plenty of care.

Evie shared how she needed to prove to her mum that she wasn’t imagining things by bravely catching the axolotl herself. Her determination paid off, and now she has an incredible story – and a remarkable pet – to show for it.

Here’s to more unexpected adventures and joyful discoveries for young explorers out there! 😊
