🚨 Big Election News Alert for Wales! 🚨

A recent survey drops a bombshell: nearly 60% of people in Wales are in the dark about the new way they’ll be voting this May! With the Senedd elections just around the corner, the info is surprising and raises questions about voter awareness.

Conducted by Cardiff University and YouGov, the survey highlights widespread confusion around the newly introduced closed proportional list system. So, how does it work? Wales will be split into six larger constituencies, each electing six Members of the Senedd (MSs). Parties will rank their candidates, and the seats will be filled based on each party’s share of the votes. Yet, a stunning 58% of those surveyed had no clue about the system. 🙈
Not only is there confusion over the voting process, but many also struggled to pinpoint which areas are devolved. While higher-profile issues like education (devolved) and immigration (not devolved) are more understood, 81% were unsure about social care, and 69% didn’t know about policing.
When it comes to party leaders, Eluned Morgan stands as the most recognised, with 62% identifying her as Welsh Labour’s leader. In contrast, a whopping 77% haven’t heard of Reform’s Dan Thomas.
Despite the confusion, there’s a silver lining! Public understanding of devolution has improved over the last decade, a shift often credited to the increased visibility of local politicians during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As May’s elections approach, it’s crucial to spread the word about these changes! 🗳️ Let’s make sure everyone is in the know!
