The World Cup fever is in full swing, but not everyone is thrilled with the BBC’s approach this year. The BBC opted for a high-tech studio in Salford for its coverage, while ITV decided to dazzle with a glamorous setup overlooking Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

Former BBC presenter Dan Walker has jumped into the debate, backing the Beeb’s decision to stay in the UK. He pointed out that no matter what the BBC does, it’s a lose-lose situation: fly out and face criticism for high costs or stay home and get slammed for not being on the ground. He emphasised that while it’s great to be present, effective coverage doesn’t always require an overseas studio.

Walker engaged with TV critic Scott Bryan, who questioned the necessity of a fancy location. Walker argued that experiencing events firsthand is invaluable, even in our age of remote broadcasting. The BBC, however, assures fans they’re not cutting corners—its Salford studio boasts a state-of-the-art LED screen to bring viewers all the action as if they were right there!

Despite some criticism, BBC’s director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski explained that fiscal responsibility is crucial, especially when licence fees fund the coverage. Meanwhile, some presenters, like Gabby Logan, support the choice, citing sustainability and financial practicality.

On the flip side, Gary Lineker, now with Netflix’s World Cup team, sees it differently. For him, the spectacle of the World Cup justifies a full-scale operation on-site. But as the debate rages on, the BBC maintains that quality coverage doesn’t always mean hopping on a plane. 🛫✨
