Cardiff Authorities Forge Ahead with Acquisition of 40-Unit Property Despite Major Oversight

Cardiff Council is making headlines with its decision to purchase a block of 40 flats, despite a significant report blunder! The council initially identified the property as being in Cathays but has now confirmed it’s actually located in neighbouring Gabalfa.

During a recent cabinet meeting, council leader Huw Thomas admitted the oversight went unnoticed, meaning that the councillors for the correct ward weren’t consulted beforehand. Oops! Rodney Berman, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, wasn’t thrilled and urged for a delay, emphasising the importance of proper consultation with the right local reps.

Berman questioned the rush, given the mix-up, but Thomas stood firm on the council’s commitment to expanding its housing stock. He expressed confidence in receiving support from local members, adding: “I’d be amazed if local members did not support that aim.” Cllr Lynda Thorne of housing and communities echoed the sentiment, citing the importance of proceeding with the purchase.

The Gabalfa property boasts 15 single-bedroom apartments, 22 two-bedroom units, and three three-bedroom flats. Initially used as student accommodation, they won’t be re-let this summer, ensuring vacant possession before the sale. The sale price is still under wraps, but rental income will cover ongoing management costs.
