Exciting news for Cardiff! Over 70 beloved buildings in our city have been added to the local heritage list, ensuring their architectural, cultural, and historic significance is preserved for future generations. 🎉 From iconic pubs like the Crwys and Canton Cross Vaults to cultural gems like Chapter Arts Centre, this list is all about recognising our rich cityscape.

While this doesn’t mean these buildings are immune to change, it does mean any alterations will be carefully considered, tipping the scales in favour of heritage conservation. Cardiff Council’s Cllr Dan De’Ath emphasises the balance between protecting our past and allowing for thoughtful change. Meanwhile, Council leader Cllr Huw Thomas describes it as more of a “brake lever” than a stop sign in our city’s development journey. 🚦
In addition to new entries, the heritage list introduces a structured process for adding and removing properties, complete with nomination forms for those eager to get involved. Originally adopted in 1997, this list now champions around 200 properties, standing as a testament to Cardiff’s commitment to preserving its unique identity. 🏛️

Amidst these heritage updates, Cardiff is also embracing new developments. The former Howells department store on St Mary Street will soon be transformed with apartments, offices, and more, while City Road sees the go-ahead for new housing and commercial units.
Check out some of the newest additions to the local heritage list: The Crwys, Chapter Arts Centre, Canton Cross Vaults, The Cottage, and many more! Each one telling a story of Cardiff’s past while providing a compass for its future.
