🚧 Update on Carmarthen’s Debenhams Makeover! 🚧
Exciting things are happening with the £41 million transformation of the old Debenhams building in Carmarthen! Once a beloved department store, it’s being revamped into a buzzing community hub called Atriwm. But, like all great projects, it’s hit a bit of a snag.
🔧 The council discovered an unexpected structural issue that requires addressing, which means extra costs and a bit of a delay. They’ve set aside £2 million to fix the problem, aiming to ensure everything’s spot on.
🔜 So, what’s in store once it opens in 2027? Atriwm is set to feature a 24-hour gym, a children’s play centre, electric go-karting, an obstacle activity course, and indoor golf. Plus, it’ll house a customer service hub and visitor info outlet.
🏥 The local health board and University of Wales Trinity Saint David are also getting involved, offering various therapies and services. A fantastic mix of fun and essential services, all under one roof!
⛔ Traffic management on St Catherine’s Street will remain until autumn this year. Expect some delays but trust us, it’ll be worth the wait!
🎉 The big news? The upgrade is being backed by the UK and Welsh Governments, with a cool £28.2 million, topped up by a £12.8 million council contribution.
Cllr Lenny reassures that although tricky choices were made, the outcome will be an incredible asset for Carmarthen and its surroundings. Stay tuned for more updates as they come in!
