A new nine-bed HMO proposal in Newport is raising eyebrows, and some locals say it’s like cramming ‘sardines in a tin’. Earlier this year, plans for an eight-bed conversion at 60 Ombersley Road got the green light. Now, the owner’s hoping to expand yet again by adding another bedroom.

Pat Drewett, councillor for the Allt Yr Yn ward, fiercely opposes the move. He argues that the neighbourhood is already overwhelmed with HMOs, which are homes for single, unrelated adults sharing common spaces. Drewett fears this will worsen waste issues and parking chaos in the area.

However, the proposed rooms each come with their own en-suite, and planning officer Adam Foote claims these spaces are more spacious than required. Not all councillors are against the plan β with some pointing out that the eight-bed conversion had already been approved.
The new plan involves converting the garage into a larger kitchen, living area, and cycle storage, which the applicant argues will make better use of the space. Despite the debate, the majority of the planning committee is on board.
Opponents are calling for better regulation and penalties for landlords who flout the rules. Whatβs your take? Do you think these new plans are too much for the neighbourhood, or a smart use of space? Share your thoughts! π ππ΄ββοΈ
