Visitors to Chirk Castle in Wrexham are buzzing with mixed emotions following the castle’s decision to allow dogs into the gardens and parts of the tearooms. Some are thrilled about the dog’s welcome policy, but others have concerns—especially after one mum shared her son’s unfortunate tumble into doggy-doo during a family visit!

The castle, which previously limited our four-legged friends to the wider estate, is now permitting them in the gardens on short leads, as long as they stick to the paths. Plus, pooches are now welcome in the rear section of the tearoom too!

A castle spokesperson noted, “We’ve trialled this approach based on visitor feedback and are happy to provide more access for dogs in certain areas while ensuring the gardens can be enjoyed by everyone.”
However, not everyone is wagging their tails with joy. Laura Hughes recalls, “As a regular visitor, having my son’s trip ruined by dog poo was frustrating.” Meanwhile, Rhiannon Jones pointed out, “It’s tough for families without dogs to find dog-free areas these days.”
Chirk Castle is trying to find that sweet spot and reassures, “We appreciate not all visitors want to be around dogs. Dogs aren’t allowed on spacious lawns, children’s play areas, the front part of the tearoom, or inside the medieval tower.”
On the flip side, dog lovers are celebrating the news. Julia Card mentioned, “Being able to include my dog in a walk around the gardens is fantastic.” Clare Bullen added, “This change has been a real gamechanger for us.”
Although opinions are divided, the aim is to make the castle welcoming for both dog owners and those without pets. So, if you’re planning a visit, remember to keep those leads short and your eyes peeled for any unexpected “mishaps” on the ground! 🐶✨
