Did you know financial abuse is one of the sneakiest forms of control in relationships? Many Brits miss the telltale signs of this hidden abuse, often masked by seemingly sensible conversations about money or shared finances. A recent study by AXA UK reveals that nearly a quarter of people don’t view a partner controlling their bank accounts as abusive. Even more shockingly, a significant number don’t recognise red flags such as being denied access to their own ID or being removed from an insurance policy.

That’s why AXA UK is launching a powerful new campaign to shine a light on the coded language of financial abuse, aiming to educate people on what to watch out for and provide much-needed support to victims and survivors. Dr Imren Sterno, a Clinical Psychologist, and TV presenter Anna Williamson are on a mission to empower people with the knowledge to see the signs. Anna, drawing from her own experience of financial abuse, is fervently advocating for this cause.

Financial abuse often goes unnoticed because it can sound like everyday money chat – “Who’s better with finances?” or “Let’s be sensible with our spending.” But when these conversations lead to controlling behaviour, it’s a red flag!
AXA UK is partnering with Women’s Aid and Smart Works to ensure survivors have access to the support they need. Their teams are being specially trained to recognise signs of domestic abuse and respond empathetically. Tara Foley, CEO at AXA UK & Ireland, emphasises that education and open discussions are crucial to preventing this often invisible harm.
Remember, recognising changes in a partner’s behaviour, appearance, or social interactions could be key indicators. If you or someone you know is affected, know that support and resources are available.
