A woman’s plea for change at Wrexham Maelor Hospital highlights serious issues impacting care for older patients. Jayne Economos shares her father’s difficult experience, attributing it to stretched staff, outdated systems, and poor infrastructure. Jayne’s father suffered setbacks, including a missed broken rib and distress exacerbated by his dementia. Despite staff efforts, the hospital’s reliance on paper records and chaotic environment worsened her father’s condition. Now at Bryn Hesket Unit in Colwyn Bay, he is finally receiving the care he needs.

Jayne is urging Wrexham Maelor and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to invest in modernising facilities and improve staff training to better meet patient needs. Her call for action is aimed at preventing similar experiences for other families and ensuring that both patients and staff have the support they need.

Dr Clara Day from BCUHB has apologised for the distress caused and emphasised the importance of learning from such experiences to enhance care standards. It’s clear there’s a crucial need for improved communication and systems in place to handle the complexities of patients with dementia and similar conditions.
