Ever wondered why players at Wimbledon are dressed head-to-toe in white? It’s more than just tradition; it’s a strict rule! Originating from the Victorian era, white attire was chosen to minimise visible sweat stains, seen as improper back then. It also subtly signalled wealth, as maintaining white garments was costly!
Fast forward to today, and the All England Club remains firm on the dress code. Everything from shirts and shorts to headbands and even socks must be pristine white. Even the tiniest splash of colour is scrutinised and shouldn’t exceed 1cm wide—even shoes must be nearly entirely white! Any deviations? Expect hefty fines, as Nick Kyrgios discovered after his £8,000 penalty for sporting red trainers.
But there’s been a recent change aimed at supporting female players. Players can now wear darker undershorts to alleviate menstruation concerns, a welcome nod towards player wellbeing.
