Andrew Castle, the familiar voice behind BBC’s Wimbledon coverage, is hanging up his commentator’s mic after an unexpected call from the BBC. After 23 years of being the lead commentator for the Wimbledon Championships, Castle is set to bow out following this weekend’s men’s singles final, where Jannik Sinner takes on Alexander Zverev.
In an emotional interview, Castle opened up about this surprise twist. He was informed that from next year, the BBC plans to take a different direction with its Wimbledon coverage, with Andrew Cotter stepping in as the new lead. Though the BBC wanted Castle to remain part of the commentary team, the 62-year-old decided it was time to move on.
Reflecting on his long stint, Castle shared, “I’m very, very sad and disappointed. There’s a sense of grief because of so many cherished memories. It was delivered to me in a respectful way, but it was unexpected.”
As he gears up for his final broadcast, Castle remains grateful for an incredible career and wishes the best to whoever will take on the prestigious role. He’s taking it all in, cherishing each moment and snapping a few extra pictures as memorabilia.
