Devoted caregiver of 38 children overwhelmed by surprise New Year honor, questioning if it’s an error

Meet Mair Wilson, an inspiring woman from Llanbister whose heart is as big as her home. Over the past 18 years, Mair and her husband Roy have opened their doors to 38 foster children, including those with complex needs. They currently have three long-term foster children, one of whom arrived at 10 and is now a thriving 27-year-old. Two autistic adults they’ve cared for now live in accommodation next door and are working.

This year, Mair, 67, received an MBE in the New Year Honours for her remarkable contributions to fostering. But when the recognition letter arrived, she couldn’t believe it. In her words, “I kept on thinking, ‘this is wrong, there are far more important people out there than me’.”

Mair’s journey began when she witnessed a young girl trapped in a tough home environment during her school nursing days. Her passion for giving children a chance blossomed from there. Initially volunteering, she soon found herself welcoming a steady stream of children into her home full-time. “We were put down to do emergency respite but all our emergencies turned long-term because we got too attached to them,” she laughs.

Boxing Day lunches are a testament to her enduring bonds, as 24 people, including many of her foster children, gather around Mair’s table. For her, fostering is not just about the everyday chores but about believing in the children. “It’s our job to make sure they have fair play and to believe in them, because if you believe in them, they start believing in themselves,” she shares.

Despite the challenges, Mair feels deeply rewarded, “It takes a village to raise a child, and it’s the same with fostering.” Supported by her husband and a strong network, including the Powys Fostering team, Mair continues to change lives, one child at a time.

Here’s to Mair, whose compassion and dedication offer a beacon of hope and transformation. She reminds us all that with love and support, every child can break cycles and thrive. 🌟❤️ #FosteringHeroes #BelieveInChildren
