Tragic Incident: Kind Gesture Turns Fatal Outside Pub

A heartbreaking story unfolds as a kind grandfather, David Darke, 66, lost his life following a shocking altercation near the Crown Inn, Appleby Magna. The unfolding drama began when Nathan Gothard, 36, allegedly caused a disturbance at the pub, making unwanted advances towards women during a festive evening. Despite being escorted out, Gothard returned to seek confrontation.
Moments later, after a scuffle with another patron, Gothard found himself on the ground. In a selfless act, Darke stepped in to help him up, but this gesture was met with a tragic turn. Gothard allegedly struck Darke with a fatal punch, leading to a fatal head injury that led to Darke’s passing in hospital.

The court heard how Gothard, instead of heading home after the fight, pursued confrontation. Prosecutors argue that, in a fit of rage and humiliation, Gothard lashed out at Darke to save face, resulting in tragedy. CCTV footage reportedly undermines Gothard’s claim of self-defence. Gothard is now on trial, denying both murder and manslaughter charges.
This grim event has left a community in shock and will be the subject of ongoing legal proceedings. Stay tuned for more updates as the trial unfolds.
