Former Wallaby Digby Ioane has been denied bail amid serious allegations of threatening behaviour! The ex-Aussie winger appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court, accused of threatening to kill a man over a land dispute in Samoa.

Ioane, 40, is charged with making threats and unlawful stalking after allegedly issuing threats over a five-day period in April. In a dramatic court appearance, he claimed the situation involved a “massive deal” linked to land he believes belongs to his mother, who he referred to as “the rightful queen of Samoa.” He even mentioned a mystery $100 million deal involving Samoa and Israel.

Ioane represented himself via video link, but his brother, Sala, spoke on his behalf, suggesting that mental health issues might be at play. Sala urged the court to consider the impact of potential head injuries Ioane sustained during his rugby career, noting his brother’s gentle nature, stating, “To be honest, this kid won’t even kill a fly.”
Despite the family’s pleas, Magistrate Anne Thacker has kept Ioane in custody, deeming him an unacceptable risk due to the severity of the allegations and the lack of sufficient mental health evaluations. The magistrate pointed out the pattern of threats and the need for Ioane to begin medication that could potentially alter his standing in future proceedings.
The case has been adjourned to June 8, leaving the former Wallaby, who enjoyed a glittering career with 35 caps for Australia, to await his fate behind bars. Despite his fierce reputation on the field, this saga paints a complex picture of a sportsman battling personal demons. More to come as the story unfolds!
