The murder trial of the former Lostprophets singer, Ian Watkins, has hit a major snag. The jury has been discharged for ‘legal reasons’, meaning a new trial date will need to be set. Watkins, convicted of heinous crimes, was killed at HMP Wakefield, where he was serving a lengthy sentence.

Rico Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 44, are the men in the spotlight, accused of fatally attacking Watkins in his prison cell. Leeds Crown Court heard that after the incident, Gedel handed the weapon to Dodsworth, who disposed of it. Both have denied the murder charges.

The judge shared his disappointment at the trial’s pause, saying, “Very reluctantly, I’m going to discharge you and the case will have to be re-tried.” Gedel revealed his strong dislike for being held near sex offenders and admitted to targeting Watkins due to ‘proximity’, as they were housed in adjacent cells.
Prosecutors believe Dodsworth helped Gedel by getting rid of the weapon, suggesting he was aware of the planned attack. Dodsworth, however, insists he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and had no intention to harm. He claims panic led him to discard the knife after Gedel gave it to him.
Watkins, who was jailed in 2013 for numerous sexual offences, met a violent end behind bars. With the trial now on hold, eyes are on the court for the next move in this shocking case. Stay tuned for updates on what comes next in this high-profile retrial.
