🏉 From Rugby Fields to Retail Aisles 🏉

Remember Shane Howarth? Once lighting up the rugby pitch in a dazzling red Welsh jersey, he’s now trading the scrum for shopping carts! 🚶♂️🛒

The former rugby star, who found himself at the heart of the 2000 “Grannygate” eligibility scandal, has stepped away from the limelight. Now residing in Mangere Bridge, Auckland, Shane has taken on a surprising new role – running a local supermarket with his wife Marcella!
Howarth’s dramatic rugby career saw its highs and lows. From an incredible stretch of victories with Wales, including a thrilling win at Wembley against England, to a shocking end when he was banned from the Six Nations. The controversy stemmed from issues with proving his Welsh heritage, a chapter that’s still painful yet deeply personal for Shane and his family.
After retiring from the game, he ventured into coaching, and even went global, but decided it was time for a change. Now, the rugby legend finds joy managing their supermarket, staying connected to the community, and cherishing the hands-on work alongside his wife.
“Once a rugby legend, now just one of the community,” Shane jokes. The family-owned store is a passion project, something the Howarths considered for years. And though Shane spends fewer hours now than when they first started (down from 75 to 50 per week!), the dedication to their new venture remains as strong as ever.
Who knew a fallen rugby star would find success off the pitch in groceries? Life after rugby is a different kind of thrilling match for Shane Howarth, reminding us success comes in many forms! 🏆🙌
