In a heartbreaking announcement, England and Lions rugby captain Maro Itoje shared the tragic news that his beloved mother, Florence, has passed away. Declaring 2025 as “the most difficult year” of his life despite professional and personal milestones, including a victorious Lions tour and a beautiful wedding, Maro took to Instagram on Friday to express his grief and pay tribute to the incredible woman she was.

Reflecting on the enormous loss, Maro described his mum as “the glue and heartbeat” of his family, praising her unwavering impact on every facet of his life. Filled with emotion, he said, “She was my confidant, gist partner, friend, advisor, teacher, and my comfort. There is no part of my life where she has not positively impacted!”

Despite the overwhelming pain, Maro finds solace in his faith, believing that Florence is watching over him from Heaven. “I thank God for her life and to be lucky enough to be called her son. May she rest in perfect peace. Love you, Mama.”
Heartfelt condolences poured in from friends, teammates, and fans. England teammate Jamie George, himself familiar with such loss, sent heart emojis, while Manu Vunipola, and TV presenter AJ Odudu extended their sympathies. Former Saracens star Elliott Obatoyinbo wished her peace, and Sophie Harries expressed fond memories of Maro’s mum.
Our thoughts are with Maro Itoje and his family during this incredibly difficult time. May Florence rest in peace, and may her legacy of love and strength continue to inspire.
