**Major Disruption on Hereford to Shrewsbury Line Following Level Crossing Collision**

Passengers travelling between Hereford and Shrewsbury are facing significant delays after a collision involving a passenger train and a tractor towing a trailer led to the closure of the main rail line on Thursday. The incident, which occurred near Nordan Farm in Leominster, Herefordshire, saw emergency services respond quickly to reports of the train striking agricultural machinery at a user-operated level crossing.

The train, which was operating a service from Manchester to Cardiff under Transport for Wales (TfW), remained upright after the impact, but the shock has left the local community shaken. According to British Transport Police, two passengers onboard suffered minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene. Thankfully, officials have confirmed that no one was seriously harmed as a result of the crash.
Emergency response was swift and comprehensive. West Midlands Ambulance Service reported that one man was airlifted to Hereford County Hospital, while a woman was transported to the same facility by road. In addition, fifteen other passengers underwent assessment by paramedics at the scene and were later discharged without need for further treatment. No injuries were reported among the tractor’s occupants.
British Transport Police have now arrested a 32-year-old man from Bromyard, Herefordshire, on suspicion of endangering safety on the railway. Investigations are expected to continue over the coming days as authorities work to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash, with a particular focus on the protocols and conditions at the level crossing itself.
Network Rail and Transport for Wales released a joint statement late on Thursday, confirming that efforts are ongoing to clear the site and repair any damage to infrastructure. Until the rail line can be safely re-opened, coaches and buses are providing replacement road transport between Hereford and Shrewsbury, with train tickets also being accepted by alternative rail and bus operators on reasonable routes.
In an additional development, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has dispatched a team of inspectors to the crash site. It is understood that they will be assessing the scene and gathering preliminary evidence before deciding whether to launch a full investigation into the incident. A spokesperson for the RAIB explained that initial findings will play a key role in determining next steps and, potentially, future safety recommendations for user-worked level crossings.
Councillor Dan Hurcomb, who represents the affected area on Herefordshire Council, expressed concern for those involved and gratitude for the rapid response from emergency teams. “It’s an enormous relief that nobody was seriously hurt in what could have been a far more devastating situation. I hope a clear and thorough investigation will take place, ensuring that we address any failings and help prevent similar accidents in future,” commented Cllr Hurcomb.
Local authorities and transport bodies are advising passengers to check for live travel updates before setting out on their journeys, as the disruption is expected to persist through Friday and possibly beyond. The collaborative efforts of multiple agencies reflect the seriousness with which railway safety is regarded, especially in rural settings where user-operated crossings remain common.
With investigations ongoing and recovery operations in progress, the incident has highlighted the persistent risks associated with level crossings on the UK’s rail network. As passengers and residents await further information, emphasis is placed on learning lessons from this near-miss, reinforcing the vital importance of robust safety procedures in preventing future tragedies.
Further updates on the line’s reopening and the progression of the investigation are expected to be communicated by midday on Friday, according to Network Rail and Transport for Wales. Passengers are urged to stay informed via official channels and remain patient as the situation develops.
