A family from Hyde, Greater Manchester, have been left devastated following the tragic death of five-year-old Lila Marsland, who passed away just hours after being sent home from hospital with a diagnosis of tonsillitis. The circumstances surrounding her sudden death are due to be examined at an upcoming inquest.

Lila was taken to Tameside Hospital late last year after she began complaining of neck pain, a headache, and vomiting. Her mother, Rachael Mincherton, who is herself a nurse, expressed concern to medical staff that Lila might be suffering from meningitis, a potentially deadly inflammation of the brain’s protective membranes. However, after assessment, clinicians diagnosed Lila with tonsillitis and prescribed a course of oral antibiotics before discharging her.

In a heartbreaking turn, Rachael awoke the following morning to find her daughter unresponsive. Despite the efforts of paramedics who arrived within minutes, Lila could not be revived. The family’s shock was compounded by the fact that only hours earlier hospital staff had assured them the illness was not life-threatening.

Speaking ahead of the inquest, which is expected to commence on Tuesday at Manchester South Coroner’s Court, Rachael shared her pain and paid tribute to her daughter. “Lila was the most amazing and adorable little girl,” she said. “She was gentle, kind, and made friends wherever she went. All her teachers thought the world of her, and she greeted everyone with hugs. She loved dancing, cheerleading, and attending Rainbows. It’s heartbreaking that she will never get the chance to fulfil her enormous potential.”

As the family comes to terms with their loss, they have channelled their grief into helping others. Together with her partner Darren Marsland, Rachael set up “Lila’s Light,” a charity initiative dedicated to providing bereavement bags to siblings who have lost a brother or sister. Thanks to the backing of community fundraising events, including a family fun day and a charity football match, they have collected more than £10,000 so far. “Fundraising is our way of keeping Lila’s memory alive while offering support to other families in similar need,” said Rachael.

Initial investigations into Lila’s death have raised questions, with early reports suggesting that bacteria associated with meningitis were present in fluid samples taken from around her brain. This development has fuelled the family’s search for answers, prompting them to instruct specialist medical negligence solicitors from Irwin Mitchell to represent them throughout the inquest proceedings.

Rachael admits that not knowing precisely what happened on the day of Lila’s death makes the pain even harder to bear. “One of the most difficult things is facing so many unanswered questions about why Lila was taken from us. The inquest is going to be incredibly tough, but it is necessary to seek the truth for our daughter’s sake.”

Jack Bookey, the family’s solicitor at Irwin Mitchell, emphasised the importance of the forthcoming inquest in providing clarity. “Rachael and Darren remain devastated at their sudden and tragic loss,” he said. “While nothing can compensate for losing their child, the inquest represents a crucial step toward understanding the sequence of events and, if any shortfalls in care are uncovered, ensuring lessons are learnt in the interests of future patient safety.”

The Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which is responsible for the hospital in question, has been approached for comment but has not yet issued a statement.

The local community continues to rally around Lila’s family, who have said they simply wish no other family has to face their ordeal. Further information about the charity, Lila’s Light, can be found on its Facebook page.

The inquest is expected to run for eight days, with the family hoping it will provide the clarity, closure, and justice they now seek in the wake of a tragedy no parent anticipates.
