🏨 Exciting News for Cardiff! 🏨

Cardiff Council has given the green light to transform the old Ibis hotel on Tyndall Street into supported accommodation for the homeless, even amidst a whirlwind of local debate. This move is set to provide shelter for 98 residents, with plans for communal kitchen, dining, and lounge areas in the mix.

The hotel temporarily shifted to housing services back in January 2025 and will continue this mission for up to three more years. Situated close to Cardiff’s vibrant centre, this Butetown site has sparked conversations and stirred emotions, especially among local businesses and residents.
Many locals voice concerns over rising anti-social behaviour, claiming issues like open drug use and harassment have been rampant since the shelter’s inception. Two petitions have been launched, with some residents expressing fears for their safety and community cohesion. Others fear that existing resources in Butetown may become overwhelmed.
Acknowledging these challenges, council officials have committed to refining management plans and are hopeful that reducing the number of residents from 152 to 98 will alleviate some pressures. They assert that this temporary accommodation is a key part of addressing housing needs in the area.
Local councillors admit it’s a difficult decision with significant impact but stress the importance of addressing the housing emergency. The plan secured approval with strong support, aiming not only to meet immediate needs but also to lay groundwork for better management in the future.
