🏘️ **Merthyr Tydfil Faces One-Bedroom Housing Shortage** 🏘️

Merthyr Tydfil is experiencing a real crunch when it comes to one-bedroom homes, and it’s becoming a challenge for many. With a whopping 1,408 active applications for these homes in the area, the demand far outweighs the supply.

The council has flagged an urgent need for more one-bedroom general need accommodations. For many, especially young adults still living at home due to high private rental costs, securing a place of their own seems like a distant dream. Currently, the average rent hovers at £558, outstripping local housing allowances.
From January 2022 to January 2025, only 38 one-bed properties were completed. But there’s hope on the horizon! Plans are in motion to add 73 more by April 2029. It seems like a small step, but every bit helps.
The council’s new affordable housing policy aims to ramp up supply by setting mandatory requirements for future developments. This means every new project must meaningfully contribute to filling the gap in the borough’s housing needs. They are pushing for innovative approaches, like modular housing, to speed things up.
Cllr. Geraint Thomas highlights the importance of these actions for both the council and residents, emphasizing the pressing nature of tackling this housing shortfall. Meanwhile, Cllr. Lee Davies reflects on the challenging nature of the issue and acknowledges the hard work of council officers and social landlords to address this situation, despite the long timelines and financial constraints.
Do you think building affordable social housing should be a top priority to tackle poverty?
