Ryan Cooper, 34, just happened to be on his lunch break nearby. Noticing something amiss, he rushed over to the van, where a group of school kids had already dialled 999. Without hesitation, Ryan took charge, administered CPR, and kept Mark alive until emergency services arrived.

“It was pure instinct,” Ryan recalls. “I had CPR training through work but hoped I’d never need to use it. I’m just thankful I was there.”

Mark woke up in the hospital nine days later, with no memory of the incident but eternally grateful for a stranger’s quick thinking. Doctors worked their magic, fitting Mark with a stent and an ICD, giving him a genuine second lease on life.

Fast forward to today: Mark, 62, is lacing up his trainers as he prepares for the Newport Half Marathon this Sunday. Running alongside his son, Paul, he’s on a mission to raise funds and awareness for the British Heart Foundation. “This run is about gratitude and promoting life-saving CPR training,” Mark explains.

Ryan, reflecting on the incident, emphasised, “Doing something in an emergency is always better than nothing.”

Mark and Ryan’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of good-hearted actions. Every minute counts during a cardiac arrest, and without immediate CPR, survival rate drops by around 10% each minute. Let’s share this story to inspire more to learn CPRβ€”it could truly save a life!
