Neighbor Fumes Over Newport Resident’s Controversial Home Expansion

A Newport neighbourhood dispute is heating up over a home extension! Homeowner James George has the green light to proceed with his extension at 2 Ridgeway Hill, despite his neighbour’s strong objections. The neighbour isn’t too pleased, fearing a loss of privacy and a change in the enjoyment of his garden, especially as he heads into retirement. He claims the extension, looming over his garden, “directly impacts my privacy.”

The Newport City Council’s planning committee heard that the extension slightly exceeds standard size limits—for 50cm!—but James stands by his design, calling it a “modest, single-storey addition,” crafted to fit the site’s boundaries.

On the flip side, concerns were raised about potential loss of light due to the extension’s proximity to a bay window next door. However, officials noted that with a minor tweak, most of the extension could have been built without any need for planning approval.

In a close vote, the committee decided to approve the planning permission, but with conditions to protect privacy further—no extra doors or windows along the shared boundary are allowed.
