Beach-goers in Porthcawl had an unexpected encounter last week! A creature believed to be a critically endangered species of shark washed up on Newton Beach, capturing the attention of both locals and marine experts.
According to marine conservationists, this intriguing find is suspected to be a type of smooth-hound shark. While sadly, these magnificent creatures are experiencing rapid population declines, spotting one of these rare sharks up close is a fascinating event!
Dr. Sarah Perry from the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales shared insights into the species. She highlighted that the world’s smooth-hound sharks are either endangered or near-threatened. These sharks often fall victim to commercial fishing pressures, both deliberate and as bycatch.
Smooth-hounds are quite the unique sharks. They aren’t dangerous to humans and mostly hunt along the seabed, feeding on crustaceans like crabs and lobsters, using their specialised teeth to crush hard shells. With their docile nature, they often swim in shallow waters during the warmer months, and it’s quite common to spot them around the Welsh coast.
Though these sharks face environmental challenges, they remain a familiar catch for anglers in the area, who are encouraged to release them back into the sea.
