One major proposal could see those with rent arrears of more than eight weeks moved down the priority list for housing. To get back on track, renters would need to stick to a repayment plan and show consistent payments over three months. This aims to create a fairer system and help those genuinely in need.

Another change focuses on adapted properties, ensuring that homes are matched to applicants based on their specific needs. Plus, they’re looking to strengthen protections for those facing hate crime, incorporating definitions and procedures to better support victims.

During the recent summer consultation, a large majority backed these changes, highlighting the community’s interest in fair and responsive housing solutions. The council is committed to legal compliance and meeting the diverse needs of its residents.

This revamped scheme has been running since 2015 in collaboration with local social landlords and uses a banding system to prioritise housing needs—from urgent to no need. The proposed updates come after a comprehensive review focusing on rent arrears, eligibility, adaptation, and hate crime protections.

Legal advice has been sought to ensure these recommendations meet legislation, with some of the original suggestions revised to reduce priority instead of excluding applicants entirely.

Keep an eye out as these proposals head to the council’s overview and scrutiny committee on November 19, followed by a cabinet decision. 🤔 What do you think about these changes? Let us know in the comments! #RhonddaCynonTaf #HousingNews #CommunityUpdates
