On her usual ride to work, the woman was struck by a black Ford Mondeo turning into a yard. Despite using a bright light and maintaining a steady speed, she wore no helmet or protective gear—a decision that had devastating consequences. Her right leg bore the brunt of the impact, alongside facial and head injuries, marking a day that changed her life forever.

The car’s driver, later arrested for the collision, admitted to a lapse in judgement, claiming he didn’t see the e-scooter. Investigation footage showed the driver making a soft, gradual turn without braking sharply, as the e-scooter, contrary to legal guidance, shared the road.

Sergeant Cath Raine from Gwent Police led the investigation, detailing how debris from the crash painted a vivid picture of the impact, with the smashed e-scooter and the car’s front end marking the collision point. Further reconstruction revealed the driver had mere seconds to avert the crash, although his view might have differed significantly from the CCTV footage.

While the e-scooter ride was illegal, Sgt Raine emphasised that this didn’t remove the driver’s responsibility in the crash. The result? A £360 fine for driving without due care and attention.

This episode of Crash Detectives, aired on BBC One, delves into detailed crash investigations, offering an inside look at how police work meticulously to understand these accidents. It’s a stark reminder of the risks involved and the importance of adhering to road regulations.
