Did you hear those loud bangs last night? Residents near St Athan Airport in the Vale of Glamorgan were left wide-eyed and a little shaken as military planes roared overhead during a late-night training exercise. The scene was all part of a planned manoeuvre by HM Forces and South Wales Police aimed at keeping response strategies sharp in the face of potential major incidents.

Despite the reassurance that these exercises weren’t sparked by any immediate threat, the noise certainly caught folks off guard. One Rhoose resident reported a loud explosion just before midnight that literally shook their home, while others in Pencoedtre on Barry’s outskirts heard the commotion as well.
On the flip side, some locals had a different experience, with children absolutely thrilled to spot what they believed were three Apache helicopters slicing through the starry Welsh sky. It’s moments like these that remind us of the careful planning and preparation done behind the scenes to keep us all safe.

Even though things are quiet now, the UK’s terror threat remains at a substantial level, meaning we can expect our military to stay on their toes. If you’re living near any major installations, a friendly heads-up: these exercises are all in the name of safety and preparedness, so if you hear a rumble in the night, it’s likely just another drill. Stay safe, folks, and keep looking up!
