Did you know that Gen Z are the UK’s biggest snackers, munching nearly twice as many snacks as Boomers? A recent study of 2,000 adults revealed that those under 29 are grabbing around 81 snacks a month—almost 1,000 a year! In contrast, Boomers snack only about 45 times each month.

It turns out that seven in ten Gen Zers love snacking even more than their main meals. But here’s the catch: most of these snacks aren’t doing them any favours! Biscuits, crisps, and chocolates are leading to energy crashes that hit hardest in the afternoon between 2pm and 4pm. Talk about that dreaded post-snack slump!

Dr. Carrie Ruxton, a dietitian with the European Mushrooms council, explains the science behind it. “Blood sugar levels drop a few hours after eating, leading to fatigue and brain fog,” she says. But there’s a silver lining: smarter snacking can keep your energy steady all day long.

Dr. Ruxton recommends opting for snacks like mushrooms, which are packed with B vitamins for energy and naturally low in sugars. They keep you going without the rollercoaster of sugar highs and lows. Plus, they’re rich in nutrients that boost your immune system.
Farmer Will, former Love Island star, agrees. He’s teamed up with European Mushrooms to spread the word about snacking smarter. “I have five or six healthy snacks throughout the day. Mushrooms are my go-to, whether on toast, in an omelette, or crispy like savoury popcorn,” he shares.
So next time you’re reaching for a quick nibble, consider a clever alternative like mushrooms. They just might be the secret weapon to beat that mid-afternoon slump. Remember, it’s not about stopping the snacks, but snacking smarter! 🍄✨
