During a recent meeting, Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn confirmed the approval of the contract for this strikingly large sum. Vice-chairman Cllr Keith Evans expressed his concerns, questioning the necessity of such expenditure.

Why the upgrade? The command centre, built 15 years ago for £6.4m, has an ageing lighting system that’s tough to maintain due to outdated parts. 🛠️ The new plan involves installing energy-saving LED lights with heat-mapping technology, which dims when no one’s around, alongside upgraded external lighting.

This £483,110 contract, with a potential 15% contingency, has been awarded to Swansea-based John Weaver (Contractors) Ltd. The decision considers financial cost evaluation, contract terms, and timely delivery amidst rising material costs.

Commissioner Llywelyn assured the panel that procedures were followed and that modernising the lighting came with a significant price. Despite being seemingly pricey, it’s a step towards energy efficiency and tech upgrade for the police HQ.

Panel chairman Professor Ian Roffe previously viewed the command centre as a top-notch public building in Wales. But the lighting costs have certainly given him, and us, a surprise. What do you think about this update? 🔦💬
