Big changes are heading to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s budget for next year, and residents are feeling the impact. Council tax is set to rise by 4%, translating to an extra 91p per week for Band A properties and £1.36 for those in Band D. But it’s not all bad news!

The council promises substantial investment in schools, with an additional £1m directed towards enhancing special schools and services for additional learning needs (ALN). Overall, the school budget sees a whopping £10.4m increase, ensuring full coverage for inflationary and service-driven costs. It’s an education boost that’s much-needed in the community!

On top of that, RCT Council is also addressing business rates relief, proposing a rise from £500 to £625. Over 1,400 businesses are set to benefit from this scheme in the coming financial year.
Efficiency is key as well. The council intends to cut costs by £6.33m through measures like cost reductions and vacancy management, all while striving to protect frontline services from any negative effects. Sounds like they’re trying to make every penny count!
Council leader Andrew Morgan expresses relief at the budget outcome, describing it as a “no-cuts budget” with significant investments in social care and education. But there’s more to tackle, with concerns about the impact of waste collection changes and school transport provisions on residents’ quality of life.
Opposition voices like Councillor Sera Evans from Plaid Cymru acknowledge the efforts but highlight the relentless cost-of-living pressures residents face, emphasising their concerns over receiving less while paying more.
Councillor Cathy Lisles points out the hidden effects of backroom service cuts, urging the community to be aware of how these may affect vital services like planning and public rights of way.
The budget brings both relief and challenges for the community, as it addresses immediate needs while keeping an eye on the future’s uncertainties. What do you think of these changes? Are you ready for what’s next? Let us know in the comments!
