A senior Tory, Andrew RT Davies, is shaking things up by refusing to use the new Welsh-only constituency names for the upcoming Senedd election on May 7. He argues the decision to have Welsh-language names exclusively can be confusing, especially for those who aren’t fluent in Welsh.

🚫 Davies has decided to stick to the English names on his campaign material. He’s standing in what the official map calls “Pen Y Bont Bro Morgannwg,” but most know it as the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend. He claims his decision is driven by feedback from local residents who find the Welsh names unfamiliar.

The change comes from Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru, which decided the new political map of Wales should have 16 constituencies, all with Welsh names. The commission believes many of these names will be recognisable to non-Welsh speakers, but not everyone agrees. Shereen Williams, the head, has hit back at critics, suggesting the backlash is tied to “anti-Welsh language sentiment.”

🤔 What do you think? Should the official names be bilingual to include non-Welsh speakers, or is this a great step towards embracing the Welsh language?
