Big changes are coming to the Welsh Parliament, and they come with a hefty price tag! The cost of transforming the Senedd debating chamber has soared to £4.2 million, surpassing the initial estimates. Construction is well underway to prepare for the increase in members—from 60 to 96—following the upcoming elections in May 2026.

Currently, MSs are using the chamber in the Ty Hywel building while upgrades are made. To make room for the additional politicians, the existing chamber wall is being demolished to accommodate more desks. Other improvements include enhancing accessibility by removing steps, adding new lobbies, and integrating state-of-the-art lighting and audio systems.

According to Elin Jones, the Senedd’s presiding officer, these updates are on track to be completed by next spring, ensuring a swift return to the revamped chamber after the February recess. The total cost is being fully funded by this year’s Senedd reform budget, aligning with the plans laid out in the draft budget for 2025-26.

There’s a strong push to support local business, with a Welsh contractor leading the project and a preference for local companies and materials. While full details are still being gathered, the emphasis is on collaboration with Welsh firms wherever possible.
These renovations are crucial not only for accommodating the growing number of representatives but also for setting up new constituencies and adapting the voting system in next May’s election. More to come as we watch this transformation unfold! 🏛️✨
