A new chapter for Swansea’s fleet is underway with a move to Llansamlet, but there’s a hiccup! Swansea Council’s new lorry depot, shared with Dr Organic, looks set to bring a bit of a commute for council staff. They’re being asked to park about 800m away and either walk or pedal in, thanks to 30 bike spaces available—a move not winning fans amongst the team. Cllr Mary Jones lamented, “they won’t want to be drudging along,” especially in rainy Welsh weather. Cllr Peter May echoed concerns about the impact on morale.

Despite the gripe, plans for the new depot were unanimously approved. This includes relocating nearly 90 refuse lorries and smaller vehicles from their current digs at Pipehouse Wharf. The shift paves the way for possible redevelopment of the riverside property once sold. Proceeds from the sale are earmarked to bolster vital council services, ensuring a bright future ahead!

The site will have a new travel plan encouraging public transport and cycling for staff, and additional kennels, stables, plus wildlife-friendly greenery and nesting boxes are in the works. Meanwhile, residents can expect heavy traffic on Benson Way, with council lorries and vans using this route, while Dr Organic will keep to the front.

The council is gearing up for the sale of Pipehouse Wharf—an eye-catching riverside spot—with hopes of funding needed services. The land is anticipated to draw plenty of interest from potential buyers. Stay tuned for this exciting new phase for Swansea! 🚚🌿
