A shocking incident in Builth Wells saw Jonathan Burchell “flip” while watching TV, launching a vicious assault on his friend. Fuelled by a mix of lager, cider, and whisky, Burchell lost control, striking his friend with a glass and throttling him until he struggled to breathe. This brutal attack happened for reasons still unexplained.

The victim, managing to escape the nightmare, fled to the local police station weeping with relief. Meanwhile, Burchell was later apprehended by police as he left a pub. In court, the victim described the attack as “vicious and unprovoked,” leaving him in pain for months. Recorder Mark Powell KC expressed disbelief at the waste of Burchell’s potential, acknowledging his intelligence but lamenting his life choices.

Burchell, with a past marred by 97 offences, including assault and dishonesty, was already under a suspended sentence. Despite a plea of alcohol-induced lapse in judgment, he was sentenced to 18 months behind bars. The court heard he’s been trying to turn things around, studying in custody and hoping to become a counsellor.
Moving forward, Burchell faces an indefinite restraining order, preventing any contact with his victim. It’s a sobering reminder of how quickly things can spiral out of control and the lifelong impact of such acts. Share your thoughts on this troubling story below.
