Mark your calendars for Friday night because Jupiter will be at its brightest, taking centre stage in the constellation Gemini. Look for it forming a triangle with the stars Castor and Pollux. The planet will rise in the East at sunset on Friday and stick around until sunrise on Saturday morning.

Why so bright? Jupiter is at opposition, which means Earth is directly between it and the Sun. This perfect alignment illuminates Jupiter fully, making it outshine any star in the sky. Even the naked eye can spot this steady, non-twinkling “star.” But for a real treat, grab a pair of binoculars or a small telescope—you could see details like cloud bands and its four largest moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

As Bryony Lanigan from the Royal Observatory Greenwich explains, a planet at opposition doesn’t always mean it’s at its absolute closest. Planetary orbits are elliptical, so the nearest point may happen a day or two either side.

Don’t miss this chance to witness our solar system’s juggernaut in all its glory. Happy stargazing! ✨🔭
