If you’ve been grappling with a medical condition that’s impacting your work, you might be eligible for a helpful financial boost from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) exists to support individuals in these situations. But are you one of those who can claim it?

The “new style” ESA, introduced a few years back, is now more accessible. If you’re below retirement age, have a condition affecting your work ability, and have paid recent National Insurance contributions, it’s worth checking your eligibility. Notably, if you’re already on Universal Credit (UC), you could claim ESA as well; however, this will reduce your UC payments by the ESA amount.

Here’s a quick look at the conditions that might qualify you:

– Infectious diseases and neoplasms
– Disorders relating to mental health, nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems
– Conditions of the eye, ear, skin, and musculoskeletal system
– Metabolic and endocrine disorders
– Disease or disorders from childbirth, genetics, and injuries

During the assessment phase, which lasts about 13 weeks, you’ll receive an ‘assessment rate’. Depending on your age and circumstance, payments typically range from £72.90 to £92.05 weekly. Post-assessment, you’ll either join the ‘work-related activity’ group or the ‘support’ group – potentially increasing your weekly amount to £140.55 if you require continuous support.

Think you qualify? Apply online via the Gov.UK website. You’ll need details like your National Insurance number, bank info, a fit note from your doctor, and information about your income.

Check if you’re eligible and make sure you’re getting the support you deserve! 💪
