Exciting times ahead for Wales! The 2026 Senedd Election is just around the corner, taking place on May 7th. With the biggest changes yet, we’ll see 96 politicians elected instead of the usual 60. Here’s your guide to casting your vote and what to expect.
For the first time, voters will choose a party rather than an individual candidate, using a proportional representation system. This means the top six candidates from the winning party in each of the 16 new constituencies will get a seat. This system broadens representation, allowing smaller parties a better shot at being elected.
The best part? Anyone aged 16 and over can vote, making it more inclusive than ever. Also, while new ID rules are in place for England, here in Wales you don’t need ID to vote in devolved elections – so no need to stress about forgetting your wallet!
Wondering where to vote? Check your poll card or pop your postcode into the vote.wales website. If for any reason you need an emergency proxy vote, like a last-minute medical issue or work trip, contact your council by 5pm on election day.
All parties are promising big this year. Labour plans to open new hospitals, whereas Plaid Cymru aims to expand free childcare. The Green Party is advocating for a rent cap, while Reform UK is focused on an M4 relief road. The Conservatives are targeting the stamp duty, and the Welsh Lib Dems propose increasing income tax for better social care.
We know tactical voting can be confusing, especially with this new system, but it’s all about concentration of support within your preferred political bloc.
When will we know the results? The count starts the day after the election, with final results expected by 5:30 pm. Of course, close results might mean recounts so stay tuned for updates.
